Neutral nursery: how to create a space you love while on a budget

Our room designated for the nursery is pretty small so I wanted to design a space that felt light and airy and make the most out of the squared footage in the room while sticking to a budget.

The first thing we thought in the beginning was doing wallpaper, but having textured walls in our builder home was going to represent a major challenge. Also, the cost to do high quality peel and stick wallpaper for one wall was between $200 – $300 and since I couldn’t guarantee it was going to work with our walls, I decided to look for a different option. After searching for different options, I decided to do a painted wall arch. The investment was less than $15 for a quart of paint and the results were so much better than I had anticipated. We used the color Malted Milk by Sherwin Williams.

We chose this crib, which not only converts to a toddler bed, but you can also purchase attachments to become a full size bed. We got a color and design that isn’t very trendy so we can work with it and any color palette in the future.

The art prints are these ones that we got on Etsy and we put them in these affordable frames.

Since we had a basic closet, I wanted to add more storage for toys and clothes. I didn’t have the budget for a custom closet yet as I have tons of projects in mind but still wanted something that was functional and pretty. This inexpensive shelf and storage cubes from IKEA were the perfect solution, I love how it looks and it was super affordable.

The room is super bright so blackout curtains were a must. This was also an opportunity to add more color and pattern into the room. We chose these affordable panels and we installed them ourselves. The pendant lamp was also very affordable and one of our favorite purchases.

We also used lots of things we already owned. In general I try to keep a very neutral palette in my home decor which gives me the versatility of moving things from room to room. We already owned the storage baskets, pouf, mirror and white shelf.

I also wanted to add something vintage and sentimental, this mirror was my mom’s and then she used it in my nursery. I’ve kept it for years with the hope of adding it to a nursery one day and my dream finally came true. The stuffed lion was also my first stuffed animal and I’ve kept it ever since!

For the dresser and changing table, I chose this one from IKEA which is one of the most popular for nurseries. I did change the knobs for these ones so it would match our color palette.

I wanted this glider since it’s one of the best rated ones but I just couldn’t justify the $1200 price tag. I was super lucky to find it on Facebook Marketplace in perfect condition for $70 and I bought a new slipcover on sale for $70 and I got a practically new glider for a fraction of the price! I also got the sheep rocker and some other great finds on the marketplace so if you have a limited budget I highly suggest checking it out, you’ll not only save money but you’ll also reduce waste.

I really enjoyed the whole process of styling this space and bringing my vision board to life while sticking to our budget. If you’re thinking about restyling a room in your home I highly suggest creating a mood board and budget beforehand, that way you can work with what you already own and make sure to only buy what you need. This is my final version before I put everything together.
